Sandrart’s map is a legacy of Ptolemy’s erroneous depiction (87 – 150 A.D.) of the head waters of the Nile and of the Niger river flowing west. Many such Ptolemaic myths, despite new information to the contrary, dominated maps for centuries. In the 18th century, this began to change with Guillaume De L’Isle, favoring accuracy over esthetics by using explorer’s reports for his maps.
