Map Descriptions
Unless stated differently, all items are original copper or steel plate engravings, or woodcuts, published at or near the specified date.  Color has been applied by hand unless otherwise noted.  The expression “original color” means that the item was colored at or about the time of publication.  Most maps were colored some time after publication at an unknown date.  Measurements are given in inches, including margins.  Each item is in collectable condition, although some bear imperfections caused by use or age.  Care has been taken to note serious flaws.

Map Condition

Describing a map’s condition is highly subjective.  Mapcarte uses a rating system common to map dealers throughout the World:

Very Fine (VF) – Map is clean and bright with a strong image.

Fine (F) – Map generally has a clean, sharp image.  Flaws and repairs are noted.

Very Good (VG) – Map has no significant imperfections, though paper quality and margin size may vary.  Minor flaws such as wormholes, age toning, or a centerfold separation not affecting the image may be present.

Good (G) – Map bears noticeable imperfections but remains in collectible condition.  Foxing, a weak map image, and/or a wide centerfold separation are described.

Customer satisfaction is a high priority at Mapcarte.  If for any reason you wish to return your purchase, you may do so for a full refund, provided that you:

  • contact Mapcarte before returning the item
  • make the return within ten days
  • properly wrap and insure the item, prepay the cost of internet-traceable shipping, and return the item in the same condition you received it.

Care

Proper care of an antique map is critical in maintaining its condition and preserving its value. If the map is to be displayed, we strongly recommend using an experienced professional framer. The use of non-acidic materials combined with museum quality glass is the best protection for the map. An attractive frame and matte can add to the beauty of the map as well as protect it.

Our Chicago area clients have had outstanding results with professional framing from our affiliate, the Art Post Gallery located at 984 G Willow Road, Northbrook, Illinois (www.ArtPostGallery.com). The gallery's framing services come highly recommended. We would be happy to introduce you or you may prefer to contact them directly.
